The Red Gate Bridge is now open to vehicular traffic. Weekly updates regarding the project will be suspended until work resumes on the pedestrian and bicycle pathway that will connect to existing trails on either side of the river.
City officials expected Red Gate Bridge would relieve about 10 percent of traffic on Main Street, and an early count indicates its effect on the thoroughfare might be even more, city administrator Brian Townsend said.
Beginning at 10:45 a.m. Dec. 17 – the first business day the bridge was open – the city conducted a 24-hour traffic count. By the time it ended at 10:45 a.m. Dec. 18, 2,686 eastbound vehicles and 2,512 westbound vehicles had crossed the bridge for a total of use of 5,198 cars.
All systems are a go for the December 15 GRAND OPENING!!!
The past week was another busy one on the Red Gate Road project. McHugh worked on installing the railing/guardrail, grooving the bridge deck, sealing the bridge deck, and removing the formwork from the roadway bridge. Hecker continued their work on the traffic signals at both the IL 31 and IL 25 intersections. Those two signals were activated on Thursday, December 6.
