Cancelled: May 4 Red Gate Bridge Pedestrian Crossing Ribbon Cutting - May 1, 2013

Cancelled Due to the Recent Flooding and Continued Rain

The ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the pedestrian/bicycle crossing of the Red Gate Bridge has been CANCELLED. Recent flooding and continued rain has halted all work on the project. In the interest of public safety, the paths and boardwalks will not be opened at this time. The event, originally was scheduled for May 4.

Update for Week Ending April 26, 2013 - Apr 26, 2013

In spite of the significant rainfall and very high river levels, some work did proceed during the past two weeks.  The contractor continued to work on boardwalk construction, bike path grading, and landscaping.

In the next few weeks, the boardwalk and trails will near completion.  Final punchlist work will also continue and final grading of the site, east of the river, will also move forward.

Week of April 12, 2013 - Apr 12, 2013

The main items of work over the past two weeks include boardwalk construction, bike path grading, and watermain pressure testing & chlorination. Progress was also made on final landscaping.

In the next few weeks, more work will be performed on the trails and boardwalk in advance of the May 4 opening. (Parts of the Fox River Bluff Forest Preserve are now temporarily closed for path construction). Bridge touch up painting will commence. Final site grading and landscaping will also progress, weather permitting.

Week of March 25, 2013 - Mar 27, 2013

In the past few weeks, work has continued on watermain installation, boardwalk construction, causeway removal and final grading. Some landscaping also took place in the areas along the river that will no longer be accessible.

Mid-Winter Update - Mar 15, 2013

Despite the uneven weather over the winter, work continues on the Red Gate Bridge project. McHugh and their subcontractor (Western Utility) completed the arduous task of boring and pulling a new watermain under the Fox River.

The roadway portion of the Red Gate Bridge opened to vehicle traffic Dec. 15 after its official ribbon cutting that drew an enthusiastic crowd of more than 170 people.

The Red Gate Bridge is now open to vehicular traffic.  Weekly updates regarding the project will be suspended until work resumes on the pedestrian and bicycle pathway that will connect to existing trails on either side of the river. 

 

Friday, December 28, 2012 - Jan 7, 2013

City officials expected Red Gate Bridge would relieve about 10 percent of traffic on Main Street, and an early count indicates its effect on the thoroughfare might be even more, city administrator Brian Townsend said.

Beginning at 10:45 a.m. Dec. 17 – the first business day the bridge was open – the city conducted a 24-hour traffic count. By the time it ended at 10:45 a.m. Dec. 18, 2,686 eastbound vehicles and 2,512 westbound vehicles had crossed the bridge for a total of use of 5,198 cars.

All systems are a go for the December 15 GRAND OPENING!!!

Week of December 10, 2012 - Dec 7, 2012

The past week was another busy one on the Red Gate Road project. McHugh worked on installing the railing/guardrail, grooving the bridge deck, sealing the bridge deck, and removing the formwork from the roadway bridge. Hecker continued their work on the traffic signals at both the IL 31 and IL 25 intersections. Those two signals were activated on Thursday, December 6.
